Health Testing
Health testing is very important as alongside temperament, the health of
your dog throughout its life is of primary importance to you as pet
owners. Buying a puppy from health tested parents with good results will
dramatically reduce or prevent your puppy developing inherited diseases.
These puppies will cost more to buy initially as the health tests do cost
the breeder money but the benefits in the long run far outweigh any increased
costs at the beginning.
Labrador retrievers are Hip and Elbow scored to reduce the chances of the puppy developing hip or elbow dysplasia which can be common in labradors and they have annual eye tests which test for a range of eye diseases. They are also commonly tested for PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) - a genetic eye disease, CNM (Centronuclear Myopathy) and EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse).
Breeders may carry out some or all of the available tests and should be able to show you the health test results of the parents of your chosen puppy and explain these to you. If you are told that the parents 'are' health tested - proof of these tests should be asked for.
Choosing to buy a 'cheaper' puppy without health tests may prove in the long run to be not only disappointing and costly but heart-breaking too.
All of our Labradors here at Madgack Labradors are x-rayed to gain Hip and Elbow scores to ensure only low scoring dogs will ever be bred from. Our Labradors also hold current clear eye certificates and have been DNA tested for PRA, CNM and EIC.
